The Full Story
When we think of Audemars Piguet today, the ever-so-popular and sporty Royal Oak immediately comes to mind. That's not quite fair, however, because Audemars Piguet has a long history in the realm of dressy and ultra-thin watchmaking. This present example has an ultra-slim square case with softly curved edges, representing the best of the mid-century modern design language that was popular throughout the 1960s. The soft ivory-colored dial is tastefully adorned with a touch of gold through the svelte baton hands and linear hour markers. Inside the square case is Audemars Piguet’s ultra-slim caliber 2003. The movement was introduced in November of 1953 and was based on the brand's earlier ultra-thin 9ML caliber. This updated movement consisted of fewer bridges in order to simplify and create a more resilient movement. Caliber 2003 continued to be part of Audemars Piguet's regular movement production for approximately 50 years, and to this day, it remains the flattest conventionally constructed hand-wound movement in the world.
