1960s Dodane Type 21 With Military Engravings
Why This Watch Matters
When a watch’s service history is fully documented on the caseback, you’re forced to take notice.
The Full Story
In the early 1950s, the French Army released the technical specifications for a chronograph it intended for the Air Force. The case was designed to have a 38mm diameter, the dial was to be black, and, most importantly, the chronograph would come with a flyback complication. From this design, many brands supplied watches to the army, from Breguet to Vixa. However, when a new set of specifications came out in 1956 with a focus on increased reliability, only Dodane came through. As with any military-issued watch in France, this Type 21 bears specific markings on the caseback, indicating when it would need to undergo servicing again ("F.G." stands for “Fin de Garantie,” or end of guarantee). As indicated by the caseback engravings, this watch was first required to be serviced on the 21st of February 1969, then again in 1972, 1976, 1978, and 1981. If this watch could talk (it would speak French).

What we Love and What You Should Know
This watch is in exemplary condition for its age and the use it clearly underwent. The coin-edge bezel is still very much intact, and the light engravings on the bezel are very legible. The crystal is likely not original, but it showcases the very well-preserved state of the dial. Additionally, the flyback complication works smoothly, as it should. This is a great vintage military watch with fascinating history to boot. Why This Watch Matters
