1965 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Ref. 1500

Why This Watch Matters

The standard Rolex Date, undeniably great.

The Full Story

The ref. 1500 is one of those vintage Rolex models that's still slightly under-the-radar and that we're constantly looking to offer in the vintage Shop. It's truly everything you need and nothing you don't – one of the most straightforward watches Rolex has ever made. Translated from Rolex jargon, Oyster Perpetual Date indicates the ref. 1500 has an Oyster case, a self-winding movement, and a date complication.

Though the reference was produced in multiple variants, specifically with numerous dial colors and layouts, our example is truly one of the classics with a silver or case matching stainless steel tone sunburst finish dial and simple – very Rolex – applied hour markers. At each hour outside of 12 o'clock where the applied Rolex coronet sits, there's a lume plot on the outer tip of the hour marker. On our watch, these plots have developed a pleasing patina that stands out against the matching tones of the rest of the watch very well. Overall, this ref. 1500 checks a lot of boxes and offers a great vintage look.

What We Love And What You Should Know

Things We Love:

- Smooth bezel and Oyster case
- Rivet link Oyster bracelet with matching year stamp
- Great overall patina and look

Things To Know:

- Scratches on case and bracelet
- Bracelet has stretch

The watch is in overall very good, honest condition. The case is strong with scratches. The back of the lugs show some scratches that are most likely from the bracelet being taken off and on. The caseback has a few scratches and small marks.

The silver tone dial is in overall great condition with light patina. The hands and applied hour markers have developed a light patina. The lume on the dial is all present and intact. The lume on the hands and on the dial has developed patina and is matching in color.

The Oyster bracelet is fitted with the correct riveted links and has some stretch in between. Overall the bracelet is in average condition with scratches. The clasp code of "1 65" dates the bracelet to the first quarter of 1965, which makes sense given the year of this example. The case, dial, movement, crown, and bracelet are signed. This watch was photographed on a 160mm/6.3inch wrist.
